My Apathy (tony walker) and the river.
I like rivers. They are a place of life and growth and refreshment. But this picture of a river I see in my mind's eye is very different. I go to the river looking to be refreshed, but to my dismay I see a dead body floating slowly by and the air stinks of dead flesh. I think what should I do? What can I do? Then I start sinking into retreat into apathy. I console myself saying this is not my doing, this is not my problem. But as I continue to look at the river I see to my horror that the river is full of dead bodies and that is why the stench is so strong. Now I think I can not just sit by and do nothing. I must find out more, so I travel up river only to be aghast at what I see. To my shock I see people throwing bodies into the river, only these bodies being cast into the river are not dead. They are alive and they drown and rot in the river. And I said oh Lord help me, what is my part to do with all this? And the Lord says “you have right doctrine, but where is your action? My children are being put to death and you have your right thoughts and high platitudes! My children are in a house on fire and you drive by and you say I did my part, my thoughts are right and I gave to the firefighter's fund. This house afire is not my responsibility. God says “come away from your apathy and put action to your thoughts. Whatever you do unto the least of these you do unto me. And that mess in the river is causing the land to stink and their blood is crying out to me”. Now my thought is well I will do something today then I will be off the hook for the rest of the year. And God tells me “thank you my son, but my children are being but to death daily and you need to make this a daily part of your life”. What I tell God is “Yes lord I want to be your willing servant, show me your way. Help me to know and do your will. Help me to make a Godly difference in people's lives, and help me to point them to you”.
Part 3 next: Letter about my apathy 3-of-3 and calling me to action
